GO Feminism

Blog 1 This ones for the Girls  As a society, we are undergoing a transition that has brought us to a second civil rights movement. Issues of race, class, and gender have been raked to the forefront and have probably permeated at least a few of your recent, daily interactions.

Women’s issues especially have been a hot topic, and these debates have ushered in a new wave of feminism. But long before the suffragettes, Frida Khalo, Gloria Steinem, Beyonce, or Emma Watson, there were witches.

Any conversation about the roots of feminism should begin with witchcraft. After all, it is a practice that celebrates and utilizes the creative, nurturing and intuitive power of the feminine. The word witch stems from “wicca” meaning wise one, and originally referred to men and women, but eventually evolved into a term used solely to describe, and hunt down females who revered and respected natural forces, healers, midwives, and even women who were just a bit nontraditional. Witches were a cautionary tale spread to warn of the evils that existed outside of a Christian walk. They were described as ugly, demonic, vindictive, and promiscuous. Men have always feared powerful women, and the witch archetype was a judeo-christian man’s greatest enemy. The “weaker” sex aware and attuned to their power and sexuality? Definitely a bummer for a misogynist.

Approximately 40,000 people (only 25% male) were put to death for witchcraft between the years 1450-1800. Many of these women didn't even practice witchcraft, they were simply independent, non-compliant, and non-traditional. In the past hundred years or so, the word witch has taken on a much more positive connotation. Interest in the craft has soared, and groups have sprung up all around the world, dedicated to the revering of the divine feminine. But, in a world still mainly dominated by men. It's easy to lose touch with your feminine energy. To push down your inner goddess, disarm your warrioress, and quiet your witch. But to live in harmony there has to be a balance, a yin-yang, a male and female. Don't lose touch with the divine feminine, she’s a boss bitch! The creatrix, she’s magnetic, nurturing, emotional, giving (but doesn't take shit), journey-oriented and full of wisdom.

The Affirmations Goddess candle is the perfect way to reconnect and/or strengthen your relationship with the divine lady. This candle is often passed over, but don't underestimate the powerhouse that resides within it. Set up a sacred space, and begin to meditate on whatever goddess or goddesses you work with. Focus on their qualities, and then envision yourself bringing those qualities inward, absorbing them. State your power, feel it, imagine it emanating off of you and bringing you the wisdom and abundance you need. Light the candle each day until it burns out, listening to positive affirmations with each session will also help you to grab hold of that goddess energy and carry it into your everyday life.
